Press releases for startups: when they're worth it
For a startup, a press release is worth it when you have real news (a launch, funding, a major customer or partner, a milestone) and you want presence: your brand on recognized news sites, indexed pages for search and AI assistants, and links you can show. It is not worth it as a substitute for product-market fit or as a way to get journalists to write about you without pitching them.

When it makes sense
| Moment | Why a release helps |
|---|---|
| Public launch | Your brand appears on news sites the day you launch; searchers and assistants can find you |
| Funding round | Investors, recruits and customers look you up; an official record helps |
| Partnership or integration | Both brands' audiences; partner credibility |
| Milestone | Proof of traction with a number |
| New market or product line | Updates the facts about you everywhere |
Realistic expectations
A release distributed to news sites runs as a labeled press release, not an article by a journalist. It will not, on its own, make TechCrunch write about you. What it does reliably: put your announcement on many indexed news pages, give you outlet names for an "As seen on" strip (labeled honestly), help your brand searches show more than your own site, and add sources AI assistants can read. See press release vs media coverage.
Budget
Startups rarely need a $1,000+ agency release. A self-serve distribution with named outlets and a report is enough for most launches; write it yourself or with AI. See press release cost.
The launch stack
- Launch-day press release on a newswire (product launch template).
- Product Hunt launch the same week (how to launch on Product Hunt).
- Show HN if you are technical (how to post a Show HN).
- Directory submissions over the following weeks (best startup directories).
- Personal emails to five to ten journalists who cover your niche.

Questions people ask
Is a press release worth it for a pre-launch startup?
Usually not until there is something people can try or a concrete event, such as funding. Announce when there is news.
Should a startup hire a PR agency?
Later, when you need ongoing journalist relationships. For a launch announcement, self-serve distribution plus your own pitching is usually enough.
