Entity SEO: help search engines and AI understand your brand

Search engines and AI models think in entities: people, companies, products and places, each with facts attached. Entity SEO is making sure your brand is one clearly defined entity, with the same name, description, founders, category and links everywhere, so engines can connect every mention to you and describe you correctly.

Why entities matter for AI answers

When an assistant reads five pages that mention "Citable", it has to decide whether they are all about the same company. Consistent facts (the same domain, founders, description and category) make that easy. Inconsistent ones (a different tagline on every profile, an old name, two logos) make it harder, and the assistant may hedge, confuse you with another company, or skip you.

Google's Knowledge Graph is a database of entities; a knowledge panel is its public face. AI models learn similar associations from text. Both reward a brand that describes itself the same way everywhere.

Step 1: write your fact sheet

FactExample
NameCitable (not "Citable.sh", not "Citable PR")
One-line descriptionPress release distribution and startup directory launches, paid once
CategoryPress release distribution
Websitehttps://citable.sh
CompanySerin Technologies, LLC
Founded2026
LogoOne square logo file, used everywhere
ProfilesX, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Product Hunt, GitHub

Put this in a shared doc and paste from it every time you fill in a profile, a directory listing or a press release boilerplate.

Step 2: Organization structured data

On your homepage, add Organization markup with your name, URL, logo, description and sameAs links to the profiles you control. Google uses it to understand your organization and may use it for your knowledge panel and logo in results.

JSON-LD on the homepage
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "name": "Citable",
  "url": "https://citable.sh",
  "logo": "https://citable.sh/citable/citable.png",
  "description": "Press release distribution and startup directory launches, paid once.",
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.linkedin.com/company/…",
    "https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/…",
    "https://www.producthunt.com/products/…"
  ]
}

Step 3: claim and align your profiles

  • LinkedIn company page, Crunchbase, and an X account with the same name and description.
  • Product Hunt, G2 or Capterra, AlternativeTo and SaaSHub for software. See comparison and review directories.
  • GitHub organization if you have public code or docs.
  • Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect if you serve a location.
  • Founder profiles that name the company the same way.

Each profile is a page that states your facts on a domain engines trust. Directory launches add many at once; see best startup directories.

Step 4: Wikidata and Wikipedia, carefully

Wikipedia is one of the most-cited sources in AI answers and one of the largest pieces of most training sets, and Wikidata feeds many knowledge graphs. But both have notability rules: an entry needs significant coverage in independent, reliable sources. Creating a promotional article about your own company usually gets it deleted. Earn the independent coverage first; the entry, if it comes, should be written by someone else.

Questions people ask

How do I get a Google knowledge panel?

There is no form to request one. Google shows a panel when it is confident about an entity. Consistent facts, Organization markup, official profiles and coverage on trusted sites all help. If you have one, you can claim it through Google's verification flow.

Does entity SEO help ChatGPT?

Indirectly but meaningfully: consistent facts across many sources make it easier for any model to describe you correctly, and harder to confuse you with a similar name.
