Brand mentions vs backlinks in AI search
In classic SEO, a backlink passes authority and an unlinked mention passes little. In AI search, a brand mention on a page the assistant reads is direct evidence: it can name you in its answer whether or not there is a link. Backlinks still matter, because they help pages rank and get retrieved, but mentions decide what the answer says.

Why mentions matter more in AI search
An AI assistant answering "what are good alternatives to Zapier for small teams?" reads several pages and summarizes the options they name. If a review article says "Make and n8n are popular choices for small teams", those names go into the answer. The article might link to them or not; the model uses the words.
The same is true of training data. A model learns that a brand exists, what it does and how it compares from text across the web, not from link graphs.
Why backlinks still matter
Before an assistant reads anything, a search step decides which pages are candidates. That step uses ranking signals, and links remain one of the strongest. Links to your site help your own pages get retrieved; links to the articles that mention you help those articles get retrieved. See dofollow vs nofollow and what makes a high-quality backlink.
Side by side
| Backlink | Brand mention | |
|---|---|---|
| Classic SEO value | High, if dofollow from a relevant, trusted site | Low (an implied signal at most) |
| AI answer value | Indirect: helps pages get retrieved | Direct: text the assistant can repeat |
| Context carried | Anchor text | The full sentence around your name |
| Best sources | Relevant sites with authority | Pages AI assistants cite for your topic |
Where to earn mentions that AI assistants read
- News sites. A press release distributed to news outlets puts a factual description of your brand on many indexed pages at once.
- Directories and comparison sites. Listings state your category, use case and alternatives explicitly. See best startup directories.
- "Best X" articles. The most cited pages for recommendation questions.
- Review platforms. G2, Capterra, Trustpilot: user words describing what you are good at.
- Communities. Reddit, Hacker News, Indie Hackers, Stack Overflow, niche forums. See Reddit and AI answers.
- Podcasts and YouTube. Transcripts are indexed and increasingly cited.
Write your brand's one-line description and use it everywhere, so each mention reinforces the same picture. See entity SEO.
Questions people ask
Do unlinked mentions help SEO?
Google has never confirmed using unlinked mentions as a ranking signal. They clearly help AI answers, which repeat what pages say.
Should I ask sites to turn mentions into links?
Yes, politely, when the mention is already there: it is one of the easiest link-building wins. But do not skip a good mention because it comes without a link.
