Zero-click search: what it is and what to do about it
A zero-click search ends without the user clicking any result, because the answer was on the results page itself: a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, an AI Overview, or an AI assistant's reply. As AI answers spread, more informational searches end this way. The response is to be the source named in the answer, and to put effort into queries where people still need to visit a site.

What counts as zero-click
Any search that ends on the search or AI interface: the user reads the answer and leaves, or asks a follow-up. Common causes: featured snippets and knowledge panels, instant answers (weather, conversions, definitions), local packs where users call directly, AI Overviews and AI Mode answers, and AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity answering in chat.
Which queries lose clicks
| Query type | Zero-click risk | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Definitions ("what is DR") | High | The answer fits in two sentences |
| Simple facts | High | Same |
| How-to, simple | Medium | Steps fit in an answer; detail may need a visit |
| Comparisons and "best X" | Medium | The shortlist is in the answer, but people click to evaluate |
| Tools, templates, data | Low | People need to use the thing |
| Buying ("pricing", "sign up") | Low | The action happens on a site |
How to respond
- Be the cited source. Even without a click, being named in an answer builds recognition. See GEO.
- Measure mentions. Track how often assistants name you: check AI visibility.
- Watch branded search. People who saw you in an answer search your name later. Rising branded impressions in Search Console are a sign it is working.
- Create click-worthy assets. Templates, calculators, original research, free tools.
- Own commercial queries. Pricing, comparisons, alternatives: where the decision happens on your site.
Questions people ask
Is zero-click search bad for small businesses?
It reduces clicks on simple informational content. For businesses whose value is the product or service, being named in answers and owning commercial queries matters more than informational traffic.
