What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping content so that an "answer engine", whether Google's featured snippets, voice assistants, or AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, uses it as the direct answer to a question. The term predates generative AI, and today it is used almost interchangeably with GEO.

Where AEO came from
Before ChatGPT, "answer engines" meant Google's featured snippets (the boxed answer above the results), People Also Ask, and voice assistants like Siri and Alexa reading out one answer. AEO was the craft of being that single answer: question-shaped headings, concise definitions, lists and tables Google could lift.
AI assistants changed the shape of the answer. Instead of quoting one page, they read several and write a summary with citations. The AEO playbook still applies to each passage they read, but which brands get recommended now depends on more than formatting.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO
| Term | Focus | Typical work |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Ranking pages in search results | Technical health, keywords, content, links |
| AEO | Being the direct answer to a question | Question headings, short answers, FAQs, lists, tables, structured data |
| GEO | Being cited or recommended in AI-written answers | AEO formatting plus third-party mentions, PR, reviews, consistent brand facts |
In practice, teams use AEO and GEO as synonyms. If you have to pick one word, GEO is the more common term in 2026 for AI assistants, AEO for snippet-style answers.
How to do AEO on your own pages
- Collect the questions. From People Also Ask, Search Console queries, sales calls, support tickets and Reddit threads. Use the buyer's words, not yours.
- One question per heading. "How much does a press release cost?" as an H2, not "Pricing considerations".
- Answer in the first 40 to 60 words. A complete answer that makes sense if lifted out on its own. Then the detail, caveats and examples.
- Use lists and tables for anything comparative. Steps, options, prices, pros and cons. These are the passages engines quote most.
- Add an FAQ section for the follow-up questions, and mark it up with FAQPage structured data. It no longer earns a rich result for most sites, but it keeps the questions explicit. See structured data for AI search.
- Keep facts current and dated. "Updated October 2026" and prices with the year help engines choose your page for time-sensitive questions.
Beyond your own site
AEO makes your pages easy to quote. It does not make an assistant recommend your product over a competitor's when the question is "which tool should I use?". For that, the assistant looks at what other sites say: reviews, list articles, directories and news. That is the GEO side: see how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.
Questions people ask
Is AEO still relevant with AI Overviews?
Yes. AI Overviews and AI Mode quote passages from indexed pages, and question-and-answer formatting makes a passage easy to use. Google says no special markup is required, so this is about clear writing, not tricks.
Does FAQ schema help AEO?
It labels questions and answers explicitly, which some engines may use. Google limited FAQ rich results to a small set of authoritative sites in 2023, so do not expect a visual change in Google results from it.
